Songkran Chiang Mai 2009
Thai's celebrate their New Year with the Songkran festival. Originally, this involved sprinkling a small amount of water on one's elders as a token of respect but these days you're more likely to be confronted with buckets and a collection of high powered water guns as everyone joins in up to five days of massive water fights. Although it's hard to go out anywhere during the hours of daylight and get to your destination without getting soaked, most of the pictures in this gallery were taken around the moat which surrounds Chiang Mai's Old City and the "victims" knew exactly what to expect! This festival is now becoming world famous with many tourists coming to experience what is often billed as "the world's biggest water fight". Most surprising to me was the number of parents taking very young children into the mayhem on the front of a motorbike.

So I didn't get any really good photos neither had fun taking part in Songkran...So going there next year for sure! :-)))

on April 16, 2009Great photos - thank you for sharing them! I'm considering buying a Pentax K200D with a 18-250 Tamron lens - any advice on that? One of the benefits of this DSLR is the water/dust sealing of the camera body..

on April 14, 2009Wyndham, these are the best Songkran shots I've seen yet, and I've been here a long time. Good work, son.

on April 12, 2009It's a Canon 20D. If you want to see the technical stuff, hover your mouse over the main picture and click on the Information button in the menu that appears. Basically, I put the camera in a plastic bag - a bit nervewracking but it seems to work! Glad you like the pictures and thanks for the comments.

on April 11, 2009Hello. Found your website through the address of the pics you posted on thaivisa :)
I was wondering which kind of camera equipment you use. Because the quality looks better than a Compact but I wouldn't dare to bring my Canon 450D outside of my room these days. Do you have any kind of waterproof equipment ?
Great pics anyway ! :)
